The setting – one of the most modern surgical skills and simulation centers in the UK.
Professor Vishy Mahadevan, the Barbers’ Company Professor in Surgical Anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons of England (aka the Funky Professor) honoured the PID-Academy by sharing his vast knowledge and enthusiasm to guide participants of the dental implant training programme through the anatomy of the head and neck. His background as a head and neck surgeon leant particular relevance and applicability to the significance of anatomical structures. Dissection and identification of the anatomical structures during PID-Academy’s session at the Manchester Surgical Skills and Simulation Centre (MSSSC) drove home the importance of these structures to their present and future clinical practice.
His incredible wit and affable personality guaranteed rapt attention throughout this module. All participants were able to identify key structures such as the facial nerve and the parotid gland. Structures closer to an implant surgeon – such as the inferior alveolar nerve as well as lingual nerve – were also identified. The relevance of the accidental damage to vessels and nerves in the floor of the mouth became obvious. Recognising the risks makes for a prudent clinician.
All in all an extremely enjoyable and stimulating experience for participants and PID-Academy tutors alike.
